Egyptian Basra is a popular card game in Egypt, sometimes referred to as "Al Komi" or "Ash El Walad." The game is straightforward and played with two players.
Here are the basic rules:
- The dealer distributes four cards to each player and places four cards face down on the playing surface.
- Players take turns discarding one card at a time until they run out of cards. The dealer then deals another round of four cards to each player.
- The objective is to collect as many cards as possible from the playing surface. Once the dealer runs out of cards, the piles collected by each player are counted. The player with the most cards earns points, while the other player receives zero points.
- To collect cards from the playing surface, a player must have either a matching card or a group of cards whose sum equals a card in their hand (excluding J, Q, and K).
- For example, if there are four cards on the playing surface: A (value of 1), 7, K, and 8, and a player has an 8 in their hand, they can collect the 8 along with the 1+7 cards. If they have a 9, they can collect the 8+1. If they have a K, they can only collect the K.
- If a player has a J or a Diamond 7 in their hand, they can collect all the cards from the playing surface.
- If the playing surface is empty and a player discards a card from their hand (excluding J or Diamond 7), and the other player has a matching card in their hand, they can collect it as a bonus called "Basra".
- Another situation where a player can collect "Basra" is when the sum of all the cards on the playing surface equals a card in their hand along with any matching card of the same sum value. For example, if the playing surface has cards (10, 5, 4, 1) and a player has a 10, or (8, 7, 1) and a player has an 8.
- The Diamond 7 card has a special role known as "Al Komi". It can be used to collect "Basra" of any value or, like the J card, collect all the cards from the playing surface.
- It is crucial not to hold the J or Diamond 7 as your last card, as the other player can collect all the cards and "burn" your J or Diamond 7, using it as "Basra" in their next turn.
- When the dealer runs out of cards, points are awarded based on the player with the most cards. Basra bonuses are also counted for both players.
- Multiple rounds are played, with players taking turns as the dealer. The game continues until a target score is reached, and a winner is declared.
